CIMA Employees Make Recycling Easy

Grand Cayman – (Tuesday, 26 August 2014) The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA) is the first agency to receive collection bins for small batteries, as part of the newly-launched recycling programme by the Department of Environmental Health (DEH).

Employees of CIMA accepted containers from DEH today for the purpose of collecting aluminium cans and small batteries for recycling. The development is a result of staff coming together earlier this year, to implement better practices in order to make CIMA more environmentally-friendly. In so doing, the ‘CIMA Green Team’ was created to organise such efforts and to give staff a means of developing further initiatives to affect their community positively.

For the past several months, staff have been regularly collecting newspapers for donation to the Humane Society, as part of the environmentally-conscious initiative, and they have plans to participate in clean-up efforts in the community.

Handing over the collection bins were Mr. Angello Roye, DEH Recycling Foreman, and Ms. Tania Johnson, Public Education & Promotions Officer, accompanied by fellow DEH staff.

CIMA Green Team member and Deputy Head of the Human Resources Division, Ms. Tara Abdul-Jabbar, was enthusiastic about the employees’ initiative and commitment in bringing about the welcome upgrades in waste disposal. Ms. Abdul-Jabbar commented, “A great number of our staff have always expressed interest in recycling and some have painstakingly collected cans for years and delivered them to the drop-off points located around the island. It gives me great satisfaction that staff can now safely and conveniently make their contribution to protecting our environment.”

CIMA arranged with Montpelier Properties Cayman Limited to have the bins placed outside the Authority’s Elizabethan Square office buildings. The bins are also available for other tenants sharing the buildings.
