GRAND CAYMAN (Wednesday, 18 June 2014) Shanaz Whittaker, the 2010 recipient of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Scholarship awarded by the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA), began employment as an Analyst in the Investments and Securities Division on 9 June, after completing her studies at the University of Tampa in May.

CIMA established the scholarship programme in 2007 in memory of the late Honourable Thomas Jefferson, former Financial Secretary and Leader of Government Business, for students pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics or Business Administration.

“When the Authority initiated the scholarship, it was with the expectation that the students who are awarded the scholarship would return home to work and contribute to the financial services industry, and to their country, on successful completion of their studies,” Managing Director, Cindy Scotland, said. “So we are very pleased to welcome Shanaz as a permanent member of the CIMA team.”

Ms. Whittaker interned at CIMA during the majority of her holidays, as part of her scholarship conditions.  She graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Management.

“There are countless opportunities in Cayman, but I advise students to get practical experience in their major to ensure that it is the right career choice for them before leaving university,” Ms. Whittaker said. “It’s wonderful to return to CIMA as an employee with colleagues who have supported me throughout my time at university.”

This year’s Thomas Jefferson Memorial Scholarship applications are currently being evaluated by CIMA’s scholarship committee.  The next recipient is expected to be announced in August.
