On the occasion of World Children’s Day (20 November), the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (“CIMA”) launched its first-ever in-house Children’s Day Art Competition on 20 October 2020 under the theme ‘Life in the Cayman Islands’.

The month-long competition was open to all children of CIMA employees, age 19 and under, and served as an opportunity to celebrate the resilience of children during COVID-19.

Commenting on the occasion, CIMA’s Managing Director, Mrs. Cindy Scotland said that the pandemic has undoubtedly affected the lives of many children worldwide, and in some cases, negatively impacted their academic studies, social skills and mental health. As such, the aim of this art competition was to promote children’s engagement and well-being while providing a creative outlet to freely express themselves and ward off any negative issues.

She added, “The welfare of children remains at the forefront of CIMA, and we are pleased that this competition allows us the opportunity to offer an artistic platform to help them become responsible leaders of tomorrow.” Pending further discussions, Mrs. Scotland also looks forward to extending the competition into the local primary and secondary schools in the near future.

Winners were selected from three age group categories (boys and girls: under age 10, ages 10 – 13 and ages 14 - 19) and submissions were judged against a number of criteria such as appropriate interpretation of the theme, visual impact and creativity.

The winners were: Zara Majid (10) – 1st place, Brielle Riddick (7) – 1st place, Nethmi Jayasekera (8) – 2nd place, Lilah Wheeler (9) – 3rd place, Matthew Britton (8) – 1st place, and Mason Britton (8) – 2nd place.

All winners received a trophy engraved with their names, recognition via all CIMA social media platforms and newsletters, and an opportunity to visit the CIMA offices. First place winners received a $100 gift certificate for the purchase of school supplies.

CIMA is thankful to all contestants and parents for their enthusiastic participation during the competition.
