Reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel, the Junior Legal Counsel will work alongside or shadow a Legal Counsel and be responsible for assisting with the provision of effective advice, services, and representation for legal and regulatory matters to various divisions within CIMA ensuring their effective and efficient operations.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will:
• Formulate and suggest sound advice pertaining to varied subject matters for divisions within CIMA on legal matters and recommends appropriate legal response or action;
• Assist with gathering relevant evidence and information in preparation for civil litigation oralternative dispute resolutions, and assist CIMA representatives in court hearings and other legalproceedings;
• Research and/or draft requirements and directives under the Monetary Authority Act, as well asrelevant circulars and memoranda of understanding and advises Management on contraventions ofany of the Acts, regulations or directives;
• Research, analyse and propose changes to the legislative framework to ensure CIMA is operatingconsistent with international standards and best practice;
• Research and draft legal opinions on legal problems and issues arising from specific cases and on anyCIMA related matters;
• Assist the Policy & Development Division and the regulatory divisions in the development andpreparation of relevant licensing policies, procedures and guidance notes to the Cayman Islandsfinancial industry; and
• Review and advise on all correspondence regarding requests for assistance by and to overseasregulatory authorities.
REQUIREMENTS:
• A solicitor, barrister or attorney-at-law qualified to practice in Cayman pursuant to the provisions ofthe Legal Practitioners Law; and
• Two to three (2-3) years of post-qualification experience in litigation, civil, corporate commercial oradministrative law;
• Experience in financial regulation and international financial legal matters would be advantageous;
• Knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, regulations and procedures governing CIMAand working knowledge of the Cayman Islands court system;
• Proven advocacy and presentation skills;
• Sound research, analytical and investigatory skills to quickly analyse and assist with wide-rangingfactual situations, (some of which could be complex) to understand key risk issues; and
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially MS Excel, Word.
