On her birth in 1926, it seemed highly unlikely the eldest daughter of the Duke of York would ever become Queen of England, but history will forever show that when called upon to accept the duties of monarch, she carried them out with the ability, charm and diplomacy expected of someone groomed for the task.
Following the abdication of her uncle, Edward VIII and the crowing of her father as King George VI, Queen Elizabeth was first appointed as a Counsellor of State at the age of 18, from which time she was able to assume the duties of monarch if called upon. That time came in 1952.
The obverse of the coin features the famous Arnold Machin portrait of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II, celebrating her Silver Jubilee in 1977.
