Queen Mary I 1553-1558

Daughter of Henry VIII and his first wife Catherine of Aragon, Mary proclaimed herself Queen shortly after the death of her brother Edward VI. It was at a period in history when court intrigues were rife and her cousin, Lady Jane Grey, who had illegally been given the throne immediately following Edward's death, was beheaded shortly after Mary's triumphant coronation.

The first sovereign Queen of England ruled for five years during which the popularity and enthusiasm which greeted her reign turned, so that she died, at the age of 42, unloved and unmourned.

The obverse of the coin features the famous Arnold Machin portrait of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II, celebrating her Silver Jubilee in 1977.
