Reproduction and Use of Images of Cayman Islands Currency

General Public Notices
Date: Tue, 23 December 2025

The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA) reminds the public, vendors, businesses, advertisers, and media outlets that any reproduction, duplication, publication, or other use, whether in whole or in part, of Cayman Islands currency requires CIMA's prior written authorisation.

Any unauthorised use or imitation of Cayman Islands currency, whether in physical, digital or other form, is strictly prohibited and may constitute a breach of the Monetary Authority Act and other laws resulting in civil and/or criminal liability.

In accordance with CIMA's Reproduction Guidelines, reproductions must not distort or improperly display the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, or place it in offensive contexts.

Key Restriction on Merchandise and Promotional Items

CIMA also strictly prohibits the use of Cayman Islands banknote images on commercial articles including, but not limited to, clothing, merchandise, and promotional materials, without CIMA’s prior written authorisation.

CIMA has recently been made aware of instances in which vendors have marketed and sold articles for sale featuring unauthorised reproductions and imitations of Cayman Islands banknotes, including the $50 denomination. This activity may constitute a breach of CIMA’s copyright and other applicable laws.

Legal Consequences

Under Section 311 of the Penal Code, it is an offence for any person or company, without lawful authority, to sell, offer, or promote articles bearing a design in imitation of any Cayman Islands banknote or coin that is legal tender. Conviction may result in imprisonment for up to six months or a fine.

CIMA is committed to safeguarding the integrity of the Cayman Islands currency and will pursue enforcement action against any breaches.

How to Seek Approval

For information on reproduction requests or guidelines, contact CIMA's Currency Division at ContactCurrency@cima.ky or (345) 949-7089.

CIMA urges all vendors and businesses to comply with these requirements to avoid serious legal consequences.
